Experience – Does it matter when you appoint the Secretary of Homeland Security?

by Mary on December 29, 2009

Lets talk about Janet Napolitano.  Ok, she’s a nice lady.   She tries to shmooze the media, but they tackle her when she runs a foul.  She likes mountain climbing.  She’s not gay and even opposes same sex marriage according to one entry I read online.  She is a former governor of Arizona, and certainly has her laundry list of high end achievements.  So, What?   Am I going to spew anti-Janet Napolitano rhetoric?  Of course not!

Am I going to point out the fact that Janet does not in any way shape or form, qualify to be our United States Secretary of Homeland Security.     Why, Yessss.  Thats what I felt like doing tonight.

From what I’ve read, Janet Napolitano has ZERO law enforcement experience.  She has no experience in the cultures of terrorism nor has she ever been involved in the FBI, the CIA or any type of background that might even give a hint that she is a somewhat qualified candidate for this very important job to protect our country and its people.

Sure, maybe I’ve had my head in the sand about it, and I’ve ignored the whole Janet Napolitano appointment.  But today…. today I woke up.

What about   our recent airline lap bomber’s dad who is a highly respected Nigerian retired banker and contacted the American Embassy in Nigeria to warn of his son.  That must have been very difficult to rat out his son, but he felt it was the right thing to do.  This man made a brave decision to contact the American Embassy in Nigeria to alert us about his concerns that his son was possibly involved in terrorism.  That tip did trigger reports to U.S. diplomatic missions and department headquarters in Washington. It was also shared with the interagency National Counter Terrorism Center.

Here again, just as in the Nadal case at Fort Hood, our government is so afraid of political missteps and the fears of “profiling” that we simply give these terror suspects the benefit of the doubt.  Basically, nothing was done when alerts, tips and reports swirled about on this little nigerian gangster al-qaeda wanna-be.  He botched the job too and now he has raw burnt thighs.  Oooh, that must hurt.  Will the big boys let him carry another piece of plastic once he is released back into the world?  Or will we send him to a US prison and let the tax payers earn the privilege of supporting this misguided son of a wealthy Nigerian family – where he’ll spew his garbage  for years in the penitentiary.

Janet, with all due respect, you aren’t filling the bill for U.S. Homeland Security. I’m sure President Barack can find you another nice important job, but leave Secretary of Homeland Security to someone with a bit more experience in terrorism, law enforcement, border security, etc.
